How I work to create safe and inclusive spaces for all of my clients
We’ve all been there—the split second before the shutter clicks when you instinctively hold your breath, stiffen your shoulders, and put on your "camera face." It’s a defense mechanism. Being photographed is an act of vulnerability, and for many of us, showing up as our raw, unfiltered selves feels a lot like standing on stage to perform a monologue for the first time without a script.
If you’ve been searching for a safe space photo session in Calgary, I want you to know: I see you. And I’ve built my entire practice around making sure you feel protected, not just "captured."
Why "Safe Space" Matters
Because I'm a photographer and even I'm scared to be the one being photographed sometimes. To me, a safe space isn't just a quiet studio or a secluded corner of Fish Creek Park. It is an emotional environment.
As a mental health advocate and a witness to so many human stories, I know that your best photos don't happen when you’re "performing." They happen when your nervous system feels settled enough to let your guard down. When you feel safe, your real expression, the one your favorite people recognize finally has room to breathe.
My "Witness" Approach
I’ve moved away from the high-pressure, 30-minute "mini-sessions" or perfect practiced poses because it’s the opposite of a safe space. You can't rush connection. You can't schedule a breakthrough.
Instead, we team up. Here is how I protect your space during our session:
The Buffer Zone: We start by talking, moving, and just being in the space together. No pressure to "pose" right away. We wait for the adrenaline to fade. I get to know you and probably show you atleast 5 pictures of my dog cause duh.
The Collaboration: You aren't a subject; you’re a person. If a certain location or angle makes you feel exposed rather than empowered, we change it. You have the remote to this experience.
The "Magic in the Mess": I’m not looking for the version of you that looks like a magazine cover. I’m looking for the version of you that feels like the truth. The loud laugh, the quiet thought, the "imperfect" moment that is actually perfectly you. Everyone has insecurities and things they don't like.
Who This Is For
A safe space session is for the person who has always felt "awkward" in front of the lens. It’s for the entrepreneur who wants their branding to feel soulful rather than corporate. It’s for the couple who wants to document their love without the stiff, traditional poses.
It’s for anyone who is tired of being told to "just smile" and is ready to be truly seen.
Let’s Team Up
I’m not here to take a picture of what you look like; I’m here to be a witness to who you are. If you’ve been hesitant to book a session because you haven't found a space that feels safe enough for your story, I’d love to chat.
At my home office in Calgary (usually with my assistant Arlo the pup nearby), I’m constantly reminded that the most beautiful things in life are the ones that are real. Let’s document your real.
Until next time ;)
