Beyond the Lens: Why I focus on connection instead of perfection

For a long time, I thought my job as a photographer was to be a curator of utmost perfection. I thought it was about finding the ideal light, correcting the pose, and delivering a set number of "flawless" digital files. But the more time I spent behind the lens, the more I realized that perfection is actually the least interesting thing about us and honestly makes for a lot of boring images. I mean who really wants to scroll through another friend/family members facebook post with the same 10 poses and look at a bunch of airbrushed, filtered faces all day.
We don't need to be perfect to be extraordinary. We just need to be honest.
A New Way of Seeing
If you’ve noticed things looking a little different around here, it’s because I’ve officially shifted my focus. I’m moving away from the "structured, timed and limited" model and toward something much more intentional.
I’m calling it Connection-Based Photography. I realized that my best work, the photos that make you look back and grin years later didn't happen because I told someone to smile in that moment. They happened because I was a witness to a real moment. The way a partner looks at you when they think no one is watching. The wild, uncoordinated joy of a pet. The focused grit of an athlete or the quiet passion of a chef.
Why the Shift?
I’m a professional photographer, but I'm also a human who knows that life is messy. I know that the most precious memories aren't the ones where we look like models; they’re the ones where we look like ourselves. When I scroll through my own family albums I see every moment for what it is. I don't look at photos of my mom playing with us and think wow if only she had tilted her head slightly to the left. I don't look at the family Christmases or Birthday's and think boy don't I wish somebody had airbrushed that toddlers face a little bit more.
At the end of the da, my mission is simple: I want you to feel seen.
When we team up, I’m not just a vendor you hired for an hour. I’m your creative partner. I use my professional background to handle the logistics and the technical details so that you can simply exist in your own skin. I’m here to capture the "magic in the mess" and protect the stories you’re afraid to lose.
What to Expect Next from me
You’ll see this philosophy reflected in everything I do now. From my branding sessions that focus on the human behind the business, to my portrait and event work that prioritizes atmosphere over itineraries.
I’m still based here in Calgary, still accompanied by my fuzzy assistant Arlo (who is likely sitting on my keyboard as I type this), and still deeply committed to the belief that your story is worth telling exactly as it is right now.
I’m not here to take your picture. I’m here to join your team.
Let’s see what we can create together.
Until next time ;)
