Why the Prettiest Location Isn't Always the Right One

When people start thinking about where to shoot their session the conversation usually goes one of two ways. Either they have no idea and feel overwhelmed by the options, or they've already decided on the most scenic spot in the city because it looks great on Instagram.

Both are totally valid starting points. But I want to offer a different way of thinking about it — because the location that makes the best photos isn't always the one with the most obvious wow factor.

Location sets the feeling, not just the backdrop.

The best sessions I've ever done happened in places that meant something to the people in them. Not because they were particularly beautiful or because the light was perfect, but because being there made my clients feel at ease. And when people feel at ease, everything changes.

You can put someone in the most stunning location in Calgary and if they feel awkward or out of place in it, that's what the photos are going to reflect. Comfort and familiarity are underrated ingredients in a great session.

Your home is more powerful than you think.

I know the instinct is to get out of the house — to find somewhere that feels special or elevated. But honestly? Home is where the most honest stories happen.

The kitchen where your family actually lives. The backyard your kids have worn a path through. The living room couch that has seen more real conversations than anywhere else in your life. These spaces carry a feeling that no scenic overlook can replicate.

And before you say anything — I am not photographing the laundry pile. I'm photographing the life happening inside the walls. There's a difference.

Your third place.

Everyone has one. The coffee shop you go to every Sunday morning without thinking about it. The park where you walk your dog and decompress after a long day. The record store you've been going to for years. The climbing gym, the farmers market, the little restaurant on the corner that feels like yours.

These places carry your energy in a way that a random pretty backdrop just doesn't. When you're somewhere familiar, you move differently. You relax in a way that's really hard to manufacture anywhere else. And that relaxation is everything in a documentary session.

Sometimes simple is exactly right.

A quiet alleyway. A park bench. A stretch of sidewalk with good light. Sometimes stripping everything back and letting your personality take centre stage is the move.

Not every session needs a dramatic backdrop. Sometimes the most compelling photos happen in the most unremarkable places because there's nothing competing with the people in the frame.

I keep a running list of spots around Calgary that my clients have loved — places with great light, interesting textures, and enough variety to keep a session feeling dynamic.
